The 21st Kingston Wharves Under-15 Cricket Competition was launched earlier today (Monday July 19) at the Elleston Road Police Station Cricket Ground in Kingston. Mr. O’neil Cruickshank, Product Development Officer of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) who spoke at the launch explained the modus operandi of the competition which will be played in two major phases, i.e., inter-parish phase and inter-county phase. During the inter-parish phase one team will get a bye in each of the five rounds as the parishes play in the counties with Kingston and St. Andrew contributing two teams. He also indicated that the county of Cornwall is the defending champion.
Additionally he said that there were fifteen (15) teams at the parish level – the 15th parish being Portmore (this in light of the vast area it represents). At the end of the inter-parish phase, a team representing each county will be selected. They then play against each other and the winner plays against the best of the rest.
Whereas in previous years there was a camp aspect at the end of the parish phase, this year due to budgetary constraints there will be no camp.
Six matches will be played in today’s first round. Kingston/St. Andrew ‘A’ will take on St. Thomas in the featured match while Portmore will play Kingston & St. Andrew ‘B’. Portland gets a bye. The Surrey County shows St. Ann against Clarendon, Manchester facing St. Mary while St. Catherine gets a bye. In the Cornwall County Trelawny goes up against St. Elizabeth, St. James taking on Hanover while Westmoreland gets a bye.
Mr. Grantley Stephenson, CEO of Kingston Wharves indicated that the company had no hesitation in continuing to sponsor the competition because it continued to achieve a number of objectives including the further development of cricket skills, instilling discipline, strengthening concentration, fostering sportsmanship and camaraderie among the young cricketers.
All of the matches were affected by rain today including the featured match at Elleston Road Police Station. Kingston & St. Andrew ‘A’ won the toss and decided to bat making 145 for 7 off 39 overs (overs reduced due to rain). Captain Jamarri Martin made 49 not out and Omari followed up with 19. The wickets went to Carl Reid 2-31 and Rheno Sinclair 2-33. The match was eventually called off after St. Thomas made just 12 for none in the 2nd over, due to rain which made the outfield unplayable.
The one completed match saw St. Elizabeth defeating Trelawny on a faster run rate. St. Elizabeth won the toss and invited Trelawny to bat. They make 133 for 6 in 45 overs with Mikhil Grant and Lyndel James top scoring with 20 each. Odane McCaty took 2-35. In reply St. Elizabeth was on 83 for 1 in the 23rd over when the rain stopped play. (20 overs constitute a match).
